Bengali cinema has given the world some of its most admired films, and it still produces sharp, original work today. This list mixes the classics with newer Tollywood films, so you can start wherever you like.
If you are new to Bengali movies, try one old and one new film from this list in the same week. You will see how much the newer directors learned from the old masters.
1. Pather Panchali (1955)

★ 7.82h 5mDrama · HistoryBangla
Directed by Satyajit Ray · Starring Kanu Bannerjee, Karuna Banerjee
Satyajit Ray's first film follows young Apu and his sister Durga growing up in a poor village in Bengal. Almost nothing "happens", and yet the scene of the two children running through a field to see a train is one of the most famous moments in cinema.
Based on the novel by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, it is the first part of the Apu Trilogy. Be ready for a quiet, emotional film.
2. The World of Apu / Apur Sansar (1959)

★ 8.11h 45mDramaBangla
Directed by Satyajit Ray · Starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Sharmila Tagore
The final part of the trilogy finds Apu as a young man in Calcutta, unexpectedly married and then shattered by loss. It marks the screen debuts of both Soumitra Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore, and their scenes together are tender and funny.
You can watch it on its own, but it hits much harder after the first two films.
3. Charulata (1964)

★ 7.51h 57mDrama · RomanceBangla
Directed by Satyajit Ray · Starring Madhabi Mukherjee, Soumitra Chatterjee
A lonely, intelligent wife in 1870s Calcutta finds a creative partner in her husband's young cousin. Adapted from Rabindranath Tagore's novella Nastanirh, it is a story about what is left unsaid. Ray reportedly felt it had the fewest flaws of all his films.
Watch it if you enjoy slow, character-driven dramas.
4. Nayak (1966)

★ 8.11h 58mDramaBangla
Directed by Satyajit Ray · Starring Uttam Kumar, Sharmila Tagore
A famous film star (Uttam Kumar, more or less playing a version of himself) takes an overnight train to Delhi and opens up to a young journalist. It is a sharp look at fame and loneliness, and Uttam Kumar is magnetic.
Ray wrote this one as an original screenplay, and it feels surprisingly modern.
5. Sonar Kella (1974)

★ 7.82h 15mMysteryBangla
Directed by Satyajit Ray · Starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Santosh Dutta
A boy claims to remember a past life in a golden fortress, and detective Feluda follows the trail to Rajasthan. With Soumitra Chatterjee as Feluda and the unforgettable Jatayu, this is the most entertaining film on the list and perfect for the whole family.
If your kids have only seen cartoons, start them here.
6. Hirak Rajar Deshe (1980)

★ 8.01h 58mComedyBangla
Directed by Satyajit Ray · Starring Tapan Chatterjee, Rabi Ghosh
Goopy and Bagha return to face a king who uses a machine to brainwash his people. Most of the dialogue rhymes, the songs are delightful, and the satire about power has only become more relevant.
It is a sequel, but you can follow it without seeing Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne first.
7. Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960)

★ 7.22h 7mDramaBangla
Directed by Ritwik Ghatak · Starring Supriya Choudhury, Anil Chatterjee
Ritwik Ghatak's film follows Nita, who quietly sacrifices everything to support her refugee family after Partition. Supriya Choudhury's performance builds to one of the most heartbreaking final scenes in Indian cinema.
Not an easy watch, but one you won't forget.
8. Bhooter Bhabishyat (2012)

★ 7.92h 3mComedy · HorrorBangla
Directed by Anik Dutta · Starring Parambrata Chatterjee, Sabyasachi Chakraborty
A group of ghosts from different eras live in an old Kolkata mansion, until a developer wants to tear it down. Anik Dutta's comedy pokes fun at Bengali culture, politics and real estate all at once.
Watch it if you want laughs that also make a point.
9. Chotushkone (2014)

★ 7.42h 28mThriller · DramaBangla
Directed by Srijit Mukherji · Starring Parambrata Chatterjee, Aparna Sen
Four film directors are asked to make one anthology film together, and each pitches a short story. The stories are good on their own, and how they connect to the directors' real lives is even better. Srijit Mukherji's film won National Film Awards.
A smart pick for people who love movies about movies.
10. Vinci Da (2019)

★ 7.01h 57mThriller · Mystery · CrimeBangla
Directed by Srijit Mukherji · Starring Rudranil Ghosh, Ritwick Chakraborty
A struggling prosthetic make-up artist is hired by a mysterious man who wants a new face, for reasons that turn out to be very dark. Rudranil Ghosh and Ritwick Chakraborty are excellent in this psychological thriller.
Watch it if you liked Andhadhun or other dark thrillers.
11. Bela Seshe (2015)

★ 6.92h 21mFamily · DramaBangla
Directed by Nandita Roy, Shiboprosad Mukherjee · Starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Swatilekha Sengupta
After 49 years of marriage, an elderly man announces that he wants a divorce, and his whole family is thrown into chaos. Soumitra Chatterjee and Swatilekha Sengupta play the couple with warmth and humour.
A family drama that works for every generation in the room.
12. Praktan (2016)

★ 6.32h 22mDrama · FamilyBangla
Directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Nandita Roy · Starring Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta
A divorced couple end up in the same compartment on a long train journey, years after they split. Prosenjit Chatterjee and Rituparna Sengupta, a classic on-screen pair, reunite here, and the film became a big hit in West Bengal.
It is gentle and a little sentimental, in the best way.
How we picked
We wanted a list that works both for people discovering Bengali cinema and for longtime fans. Classics from Ray and Ghatak sit next to newer hits, and we favoured films that are easy to find and watch today.
